This semester, the history of New York City that you didn’t learn in school, will focus on the beginning of the 19th century through the Civil War.
We will continue investigating our city’s financial entanglements with slavery alongside a growing abolitionist movement. We will also discuss topics as varied as the opening of the Erie Canal, the beginning of public schools, the Irish immigration, and why New York City was once called The Big Oyster.
