Course Schedule – Fall 2024 / History and Philosophy / FLAWED GREATNESS OF THOMAS JEFFERSON
Coordinators: Sandy Kessler, Andrea Irvine
How should we regard Thomas Jefferson today? Should we consider him a great American founder, or someone who, in the words of one scholar, should be “knocked off his pedestal?”
In this course, we shall consider these questions by studying Jefferson’s complicated relationship with the institution of slavery. We shall also review his views on democracy, popular enlightenment, religious freedom and public education, along with his many contributions to American life.
