Courses – Spring 2025 / Old Courses / ALL THE KINGS MEN
Coordinators: Lynnel Garabedian, Sandy Kessler
Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men is one of American literature’s greatest political novels.
This work describes the dramatic rise to power of Willie Stark, a one-time radical attorney who becomes a corrupt state governor and Jack Burden, the narrator, who loses his ideals, his career, and the love of his life by working as the governor’s most trusted aide.
We will highlight the themes that are most relevant to American political life today. These include the dangers that populism, demagoguery, tribalism, corruption, and the lust for power now pose to our constitutional system of government.
